Meet Corrinne - Co-Chair from Glasgow Caledonian University

Corrinne is a second year Learning Disability Nursing student at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).  She is the GCU Student Representative on the Scottish Learning Disability Nursing Network (SLDNN) Steering Group. She is also the Founder and Co-Chair of the SLDNN Student Sub-Group.

After completing an MA in Interpreting and Translation at Heriot-Watt University in 2005, she began working with Clear For All to produce information in accessible formats. She has worked on a number of Easy Read projects for the NHS, local authorities and private organisations.

She then lived in the United States for 4 years, where she volunteered with Easter Seals Arkansas to set up an inclusive art programme for adults with disabilities. Following this, she became the Recreation Coordinator at the Easter Seals Children's Rehabilitation Centre. In this role she led a team of recreation aides and volunteers, to provide a varied programme of activities promoting independence and community integration for children and young adults aged 3-21.

Corrinne has planned an international placement with the Kamuzu College of Nursing, part of the University of Malawi in Lilongwe. She hopes to spend 14 weeks working in both hospital and community settings, with a focus on improving healthcare for people with learning disabilities. Corrinne has been writing about the planning process for this placement at http://caleytomalawi.blogspot.co.uk

This year, Corrinne was shortlisted for both the Edith Cavell Leadership Award and the Student Nursing Times award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs.
