Meet Annie - Our student sub-group secretary

Annie Millar is a third year student at Edinburgh Napier University and the secretary and member of the SLDNN Student Sub-Group. After Annie had a baby in 2010, she decided she would like to work in the health sector so completed a HNC in Healthcare at West Lothian College.

Annie has personal experience of people with learning disabilities yet did not consider this her first choice in nursing, however fate found her and she hasn’t looked back since. She has worked with NHS Lothian Staff Bank throughout her university degree working with patients with learning disabilities and familiarising herself with the services available.

Research is a love of Annie’s and she has co-written an article on Mindfulness in Nursing due for publication this year. She also has a particular interest in sexual health and wellbeing and aims to conduct research in this area.

Annie was the organiser and host of the first Scottish Student Learning Disabilities Conference this year combining both Edinburgh Napier and Glasgow Caledonian students. She has a great passion for inspiring future learning disability nurses to make positive change in the field to better the lives and experiences of the patient group.

Annie was nominated for NSA Student of the Year 2015.

She will be graduating with distinction later this year and has a job in inpatient services starting in September. She hopes to continue to be involved with the SLDNN in some form to maintain motivated and inspired by innovative and exciting new practice.
